Pentamethyldiethylenetriamine is een kleurloze tot geelachtige, heldere vloeistof die gemakkelijk in water oplosbaar is. Het is een zeer actieve katalysator voor polyurethaanreacties. Het katalyseert voornamelijk de schuimvormingsreactie en wordt ook gebruikt om de algehele schuimvorming en gelvorming in evenwicht te brengen. Het wordt veel gebruikt in diverse harde polyurethaanschuimen, waaronder harde polyisocyanuraatschuimen. De productiemethoden van pentamethyldiethylenetriamine omvatten de formaldehyde-voor-maïszuurmethode en de formaldehydehydrogeneringsmethode. Pentamethyldiethylenetriamine wordt voornamelijk gebruikt als belangrijke grondstof voor de productie van sulfonylureumherbiciden, insecticiden en farmaceutische chemicaliën. Het is tevens een hoogwaardig acyleringsmiddel voor de chemische industrie, bijvoorbeeld voor polyamiden, cryoprotectanten en vloeibare kristallen.
